On 4/12 we made it to the southern border and started our arduous trek to the land of syrup and hockey. The 2 hour ride on the 894 bus served as a excellent transition from civilization to trail. The bus driver offered to let me drive his 30 ft behemoth - an offer I impulsively refused but later regretted turning down.

The desert sun burns hot, leaving the barren landscape dry and inhospitable - a place where survival itself is a struggle. Except this week. On our first night it rained and we burrowed into our sleeping bags donned head to toe in our fancy synthetic getups.

Here's what we saw our first couple days.

If you haven't heard, there's a bit of snow in California. This was taken at mile 44, about 20 miles from Mexico. San Jacinto is where we're headed. Word on the unpaved street is you need traction and ice axes to get over. Time will tell if that's accurate or just Floridian fear mongering.

0 bars of service, flat ground, water adjacent. 5/5 Highly recommend.

I do my best star gazing during 4 am natural calls.

This sign had more character than a Steinbeck novel.

We hitched into Julian in style - wind blowing in our sandy hair. It also probably helped a little with the terrible stentch.
